Hold Your Breath

David Blaine, crazy illusionist and weird record attempter, broke the world record for holding your breath. He was on Oprah and was in a "fishbowl" as he did it. 17 MINUTES 4 SECONDS!!!! I just tried it and got 1 minute and 36 seconds. I know I can go a bit longer than that when I am in the pool. I grew up in a pool in New York. Yes, my parents were fish. haha. You are so funny.

Anyhow, I thought it was crazy. What's your record?

this is a pic of me when I was holding my breath for this timing of it.

Why does everyone sue?

I just read this story and I don't know how to feel. A lady lost her eye watching her son play baseball. Basically a player was swinging his bat and lost grip in the rain and hit her. She is suing everyone. I am surprised she did not name the baseball bat company because they didn't make the grip any more gripping.

I wonder what she would've done if it were her own son who lost grip of the bat. Would she sue him too? It would seem like it. I just think that if you think conditions are not safe; 1) tell someone and complain before something happens; 2) don't stand in an area that you could potentially get hurt; 3)realize that there are always potential hazards when you are around sporting events.

That being said, I do have sympathy for the woman for losing an eye. I would probably be upset too. I just come back to, "What would she do if it were her son?"

"A Portland woman who lost her eye after being hit by a baseball bat at a West Linn High School field is suing the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, Oregon School Activities Association, two fence companies, an architecture firm, a Jesuit High baseball player and others for $2.7 million."

My "Interview" with Charles Barkley

We had a "farewell" evening for Kelvin Gardiner, my boss, on Monday night of District conference. I wrote a song, by request, and put together a little video. I have been asked to post it, so here it is.

BTW, Matt Boda was voted in as our new District Superintendent almost unanimously. He will be my new boss. He is a great guy, a mentor and a friend. I am very excited to be under his leadership. I will miss Kelvin greatly, as he has been a fantastic boss and friend as well. I don't think it will be the last I see of him though, even though he will be doing a bunch of overseas travel. The transition happens sometime in June so Matt is DS elect. Kinda like the presidential process.

Oh, by the way the "Fish money song of the day" is Petra singing "Lord, I lift your name on high. It's $1,000 Thursday, so I am listening all day. See? It works. Marketing sucker right here.

Snow in April

This morning I woke up to, "It's snowing! It's snowing! It's snowing! It's snowing!" We opened the blinds and sure enough, GIANT snowflakes falling from the sky. It was beautiful and strange all at the same time. One week ago today I was outside dying my hair for the Price is Right and I got a sunburn. Today I wake up to snow. Oregon is a strange place, yet absolutely gorgeous. With the snow falling it was hard to tell if it was sticking on the tree in our neighbors yard, because it's a cherry tree and it is in full bloom.

Well, shortly after we enjoyed watching the snow, the sun came out in full force. The forecast includes, snow, rain, sunshine and thundershowers. It's nice that the weathermen can fill in all the blanks and cover every weather possibility in one day. Then they won't be wrong.

So Karston and I went out in the back and made a snowman and had a snowball fight.

Well, today is a full one. Kynzi has a volleyball game, Karston has pictures for his team, we have to finish cleaning the house, Karston has a baseball game, I am speaking to our middle school students at church tonight and then Jeanne-Ann is leaving for Florida to go to her Grandma's funeral. It's a crazy day...here we go.

No Run? Feeling bloated

Last night we went to Todai's for dinner. It's a pretty pricey Japanese seafood buffet place where you get to eat for free on your birthday. :D They have all you can eat shrimp, crab legs, lobster tail, crepes, and cream puffs. Oh they also have sushi, salad, chicken, other desserts, but I don't waste my time on all of that.

I can pack it away when I want to. I am really glad I did not hear my friend Justin's sermon on gluttony this weekend. haha. It was a great way to end a wonderful birthday. 1 mile from my house though, I almost got one final present. I got pulled over. It turns out that my right headlight s out. I have had some issues with it for about a year. I have replaced the bulb a couple of times and it seems to be a faulty wire or something as it sometimes pops on and off. Anyhow, the kind officer decided to give me the gift of, "Another officer might not be as nice as me and give you a $104 ticket." "Thank you sir."

I was headed home from work today and got a call from Steve, my running buddy, and he told me he got tied up in traffic and we would have to run on Thursday. I decided to give my knee a little rest and went on a bike ride with the kids. Then I decided to go ahead and take a 10 mile bike ride on my own. With a 3rd of the trip left it began to rain and it was cold.

I did feel good after my ride (surprisingly). There was some pressure on my knee, we will see.

Tomorrow night is the middle school Price is Right event. I am so pumped for round two! you can watch it live on www.ustream.tv/channel/erikwithak . Enjoy.

1/2 Marathon!!! I am seriously sick!

The other day I was talking to my friend Steve. He told me he was training for a half marathon. I hate running. I even hate the idea of it. The thought of it sends chills up and down my spine. Seriously. The last time I ran any sort of distance was in college. That was a few years ago. And it was for soccer, a sport that is filled with spurts of short runs. I can handle that. I am playing on an indoor team now and I feel wiped out after a 4 minute in. haha.

Jeanne-Ann suggested that I run it with him. I told her she was nuts. She said I was being selfish and if I cared about my friend I would go run it with him. Haha. My wife is funny.

that night, I was up late and I thought, "You know what? I don't get to spend enough time with Steve. I am going to run this stupid thing with him." So there it is. It's out there. I told him and he was elated!

So Sunday we went for our first run together. He was planning on running and I was going to run as far as I could and then call for a ride home. I made it about 2 miles. My right knee was really feeling some pain. Hmmm. Is that normal? Am I getting old? ;) Do I have some strain there I shouldn't have? Is this an old football injury flaring up? Should I keep doing this?

I ran/walked the 2 miles back, instead of calling for a pick up. It was a gorgeous day out and I do love the sun. I got back and dropped my leg in the hot tub for a while. 2 hours later I went to play soccer with our team. The upside to that is I could sub out any time I wanted. And I did. We won 10-5. (5)

I went home and iced my knee and hit the hot tub again.

I am not sure what to do. Do I wait and see if it is OK? Do I run Tuesday and see how it goes? Do I get a cortizone shot? Do I have knee replacement surgery? (it's actually to the right of my kneecap.)

I will let you know. The HELLvetia 1/2 marathon is June 14th.

Oh, Steve gave me a pair of those really really short running shorts

The Price is Right Bob

Tonight we finally had our big outreach event of the spring. The Price is Right. It was soooo cool! I got to play the host, Bob Barker. Drew Carey is not very popular with people it seems. So I bleached my hair so it would look white and got a mystic tan. that was weird.

Each game we replaced the whole contestant row with another 4 people. Everyone who made it there got a PIR tshirt and got a chance to win and play a game. We played cliff hanger, one away and Plinko to name just a few. Then we had an awesome Showcase. One of the winners took home 4 tickets to a Beavers game, Timbers game, a Limo ride and several other things. Someone also got a sweet digital camera with the rest of the showcase. It was so much fun!!

Here are a few pics to enjoy from the night.

Oh, round 2 is on Wednesday from 7-9 for the middle schoolers. You can catch it on www.ustream.tv/channel/erikwithak

Red Sox tshirt in Yankee Stadium Concrete

Now this is funny stuff!!!

"Report: Boston Red Sox T-shirt buried in new Yankee Stadium by construction worker

NEW YORK (AP)—Say it ain’t so, George!

A construction worker on a concrete crew at the new Yankee Stadium secretly buried a Red Sox T-shirt under the future visiting clubhouse in an effort to jinx the Yankees, the New York Post reported Friday.

The paper cited two construction workers it did not identify, saying they were not authorized to speak with the media. One of the workers said the T-shirt was poured in a slab in the visitor’s clubhouse."

Ahhh,,,another season is upon us.

GO SOX!!!

Idol Gives Back - Shout to the Lord

DVRs are great and stink at the same time! American Idol Gives Back went a little longer than scheduled tonight and thus my recording of it got cut short. It cut out about 20 seconds into Mariah Carey. It turns out I missed an amazing end. They sang "Shout to the Lord." WHAT?!?!

The whole evening was certainly very inspiring. I love this stuff. Miley Cyrus got the most face time of all the guests. Bono was great. Robin Williams, irreverent, but funny. Jimmy Kimmel's whole routine was focused on Simon. Hilarious.

DAUGHTRY!!! Stud! (becca) ;)

Then I found this clip online. This was the finish to the night. I am not sure what I missed besides this, but what a cool finish.

Baseball and Bat Girl

Karston has started up baseball again. It is great. I am sorta helping coach...basically I am the extra helpful dad and do whatever coach tells me to do. It is no longer teeball, this is the "real deal." They get pitched to and get three outs per inning. He's not on the Red Sox (yet) but he is on the Lugnuts.

Karston got on base 3 out of 4. he got home each time he got on base. It was a lot of fun. Kynzi took on the role of bat girl. She loved it.

Are you a Twit?

I have recently gotten onto this thing called twitter. Many of you have surely heard of it. Most probably have not. The short version of it is that it is a mini blog. Something you can update often just letting people know what you are doing. They can read it on their twitter account or they can get texts. I recently saved $10 but getting unlimited texts, so I receive a few twitter updates from people I "follow." It is kind of like facebook and myspace "updates" that you can do.

Confused?

Well check out this video. It makes it really, really simple!

Wanna join me on twitter? I am going to test it out to see if it is something I want to keep doing. You can also add it to your blog, myspace or facebook accounts so people can stay updated with you there.

You may wonder if it is worth it or "who cares?" The few people I am following have made it interesting to see what they are doing. One friend twittered his experience getting into American Idol Gives Back last night. I got to find out who was on, what was good (ie. John Legend and Fergie did an exact reprise of their Grammy performance; Videos from all 3 presidential candidates will air on the show; John McCain’s video was terrible quality and “not up to our standards,” producer Nigel noted he hoped it would be replaced by the time the show aired and no offense to Republicans; Seacrest said the show will raise over 100M this year). Cool stuff.

Pregnant Man from Oregon?!!?

Did you catch Oprah yesterday? She interview a pregnant couple. The crazy thing was that the husband was pregnant. Now, the part that makes it believable is that the husband used to be a woman. She had a double mastectomy and took hormones so she grows a beard. She kept her reproductive organs. So it is entirely possible and not that much of a shock, unless you look at the couple.

You can read more about it here.

One girl interviewed on CNN said, "I'm hoping it becomes a trend. Something that catches on around the world." Seriously? Seriously?! You hope that getting pregnant becomes a trend?

Regardless of your opinion on this story, and I am sure you have one, it is a curiosity and something that we will talk about for some time.
